President Trump Pardons 77 Alternate Electors Along With Others Who Challenged the Election Results in 2020
Time Will Tell How Effective the Pardons Will Be
Virtually everyone remembers the 2020 United States Presidential Election. Most people in this Country went to bed late on Election Night thinking President Trump would cruise to re-election, only to be shocked when they awoke to find hundreds of thousands of Biden votes materialized in one swing state after another and handed the election to Joseph R. Biden. In the aftermath of this questionable election, a number of legal challenges to the election results were brought in several swing states. As a result of these legal actions, slates of Republican “alternate electors” were submitted.
Later, criminal cases were brought against a host of Republican lawyers and political activists involved in the legal challenges and those who served as alternate electors. On Monday, November 10, 2025, President Trump issued Presidential Pardons to 77 people who were targeted by these prosecutions. None of these individuals, however, are charged with federal crimes. They are all charged in state courts with state law crimes. These facts complicate the issue, as I will explain.
